Though there are skeptics of the alkaline water “trend”, the benefits of eating and drinking alkaline to increase your body’s own alkalinity rather than acidity are well documented. A healthy body needs to maintain just a slightly alkaline pH, around 7.4. Foods with a pH higher than 7 (see a list & graph here) tend to not only be healthy choices, but help balance the acidic foods most of us consume on the daily: think coffee, dairy, sugar, alcohol, chocolate. But the goal is not to remove all acid, because not all acid is bad! Salmon, nuts, eggs and beans are just a few examples of healthy acidic foods. So how do you keep that slightly alkaline balance?
Enter alkaline water. It seems to be the easiest way to counter my regular coffee and tea habit. While trying to eat a more alkaline diet is certainly a piece of the puzzle, simply by staying hydrated with alkaline water I’m flushing out toxins and neutralizing my system. If you have the choice between acidic purified water and alkaline natural water, why not go alkaline?
I’ve been sold on alkaline water for years, but it wasn’t until I found the affordable Carlsbad Alkaline Water that I was able to start drinking it with any regularity. Their naturally alkaline 8.4- 8.76 pH water is just $.60 a gallon- which is even cheaper than a gallon of average regular water! So for less than $2, I rinse and fill up my jug with 3 gallons of pure alkaline water.
Alkaline water is praised for tasting clean and light, so you don’t feel weighed down after drinking it. Truth be told, I’ve never been able to distinguish the taste difference between water brands other than noticing a slightly “dirtier” taste with Arrowhead and a weird sweet taste with Sparkletts (feel me, anyone?). But I do notice how crisp and refreshing alkaline water tastes, and as strange as it sounds, the “lightness” is actually really noticeable. It’s like a total different mouth-feel.
Let’s not forget to mention that the California Senate declared it “The Most Healthful Water” in the state and better yet, Ellen DeGeneres and Shailene Woodley are openly obsessed with it. Let’s put it this way: if you live in the area and you aren’t drinking it yet, you’re doing yourself a real disservice. If you aren’t in the area and only have expensive alkaline options, know that a squeeze of lemon in a glass of water does wonders for increasing alkalinity. So get on it! Drink alk. 😉
P.S.- Nothing makes me want to stay hydrated more than my perfect little Bkr water bottle! A definite splurge for what is essentially a glass water bottle, but totally worth the little happiness I get every time I look at that cute thing. It cheers up my work desk (#cubelife) and the smaller mouth makes for easier (read: spill-proof) drinking.
P.P.S.- Blk water is also pretty cool. And gives you a mini mind-f*ck while drinking it.
