Waking up with cold symptoms is scary and annoying. You know what awaits you in the next few days ahead, and it’s far from fun. Unless you see it as a challenge….
The earlier you take action, the better, and I don’t mean poppin’ DayQuil to calm the symptoms. I’m talking about using powerful natural ingredients and spices to fight the actual illness (which will magically help symptoms as well!).
So when I woke up yesterday feeling simultaneously foggy/stuffy/runny/dry/headachey, I couldn’t jump out of bed fast enough to concoct this elixir. Luckily I caught my symptoms starting before they dragged me too far down the spiraling sick hole, so I started the day determined and ready to do whatever necessary to beat the nastiness. I’ll share other remedies and what else I did later to avoid jinxing myself…but so far it’s working.
Step one: this soothing cold elixir. It’s a tried and true home remedy for decongesting the sinuses, reducing painful inflammation, fighting bacteria and viruses and building immunity back up. A warm cup of this cuts through brain fog like magic and adds a little pep in your sluggish step. Honestly, after drinking this I had way more (relaxed) focused energy and mental stamina than I’ve had for the past two weeks.
These powerful natural ingredients are nature’s cold fighters, and it’s amazing how well they all work together!
Turmeric contains curcumin, which is hailed for its antioxidant properties, antibacterial properties, stimulates our adrenal glands and has even been found to actually help rebuild the immune system. Let’s break it down before we get to the recipe below:
Apple cider vinegar: Literally a cure all. Germ-busting, alkalining, energizing, decongesting.
Manuka Honey: anti-bacterial, antiviral, antimicrobial and anti-fungal. Another cure all.
Lemon: Vitamin C and natural antioxidants. Stimulates detoxing!
Turmeric: Anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antioxidant. Active property curcumin clears respiratory infections and improves overall immunity.
Ginger: Natural decongestant. Anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antioxidant. Properties reduce pain and swelling, clear nasal passages and suppress coughing.
Cayenne: Anti-irritant and anti-fungal. Capsaicin thins and clears mucus, enhances the powerful benefits of the other good stuff.
Natural Soothing Cold Elixir
1 cup water
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon raw manuka honey
Half a lemon
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/4 teaspoon turmeric
1/4 teaspoon cayenne
1/4 cinnamon (optional)
DIRECTIONS: In a mug, combine hot water, apple cider vinegar, honey, ginger, turmeric, cayenne, cinnamon. Squeeze the juice from half a lemon. Stir to combine. Drink up!
