You could eat out in LA for a solid month (or two? three?) and still not hit every awesome place around. There are the classics– my favorites being Urth Caffe and Bottega Louie— and then the trendy new spots popping up left and right and on Instagram. Like any true foodie, the list of restaurants in my phone’s notepad is getting a little out of control.
So when Ashleigh and I passed through LA earlier this month for a girls extended weekend getaway, we made a point to cross some of those places off of my list. As promised, here are a few “don’t miss” LA hot spots we enjoyed:
Housed in two historic bungalows surrounded by garden patios, Alcove serves updated versions of American classics and hand-crafted drinks. The perfect place to lounge outside with refreshing iced mango green tea and refuel with healthy food after our drive. Alcove has a ton of tempting options, but I went with a blackened salmon sandwich, and Ashleigh a salmon salad with a fluffy soft pretzel roll. Will definitely be heading back to try out more!
If you spend even half of the time on Instagram as I do, you’ve probably seen these cutesy coffee sleeves before. Though very likely the most expensive coffee drink you’ll ever buy ($8 for a dirty chai with almond milk….f’reals) it is delicious and the coffee shop is a cool atmosphere to hang out in. Trendy with a capital T.
Located at the end of the Malibu pier with a sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere, Malibu Farm Cafe serves up food with only fresh, organic, and local ingredients. We were too immersed in conversation with new friends (and watching surfers catch waves) to remember to take a photo of our food (blasphemy, I know) but it was delicious. Ash and I both got massive BLT egg sandwiches, served with the best breakfast potatoes I’ve ever had.
In search of some great Sunday morning coffee after an early wake up (and not much sleep), we were told to get Iced Mint Cubanos at Demitasse in Santa Monica. They did not disappoint!
And finally, a brunch so trendy that my friend’s Instagram of it ended up in a Buzzfeed article two days later! LA Chapter is a brasserie connected to the Ace Hotel with a fresh, thoughtful focus on locally sourced vegetables and seafood. Michael (who suggested the place from his own foodie list and also has no qualms about standing to get the perfect food shot) ordered a juicy burger, and Ashleigh and I “Moroccan Toasts”, essentially avocado egg toasts on crack.
