One sunny Saturday quite a few weekends ago, I took Kendall along to try out Pillbox Tavern, a new casual beach bar and restaurant in Solana Beach named after the surf break just down the street. With a friendly atmosphere full of sunlight, multiple sports screens, and enticing, reasonably-priced menu options, it’s an easy and relaxed neighborhood hang-out.
After a round of well-crafted cocktails like the Burro— essentially a tequila mule– we dug into the Shrimp & Mahi Citrus Ceviche, packed with juicy fresh fish served Baja style with cilantro, onions and tomatoes. The crispy, still warm tortilla chips were the perfect accompaniment for digging in.
Torn between the Pillbox Burger and Mahi Sandwich, we decided to share both. Going all in we added on bacon and avocado to the thick, juicy burger, taking breaks from bites only to dunk crispy tater tots into house Tavern sauce. Absolutely decadent and extremely filling, though we couldn’t seem to put it down.
The Mahi Sandwich features a honey-chili rubbed Mahi filet seared and served with mango slaw on a multi-grain bun. Already nearing our stomach’s capacity, we ditched the bun and went straight for the fish + slaw, and of course a few irresistible thinly cut fries.
After another round of cocktails, it was time to roll ourselves down to the beach to take care of our food coma on the sand…and talk about our next visit. Wing & Trivia Night Wednesdays, anyone?
